Biography
Douglas Marchuk was the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Molecular Genetics at the Duke University School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and performed postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan. For the past 35 years, Dr. Marchuk has investigated the molecular genetic basis of vascular malformations. His laboratory identified the three genes for Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia and two of the genes for Cerebral Cavernous Malformations. For both of these disorders, his laboratory has identified second-hit, somatic mutations that initiate vascular malformation development. His lab also was part of the collaborative team that identified the embryonic somatic mutation that leads to the vascular malformations in Sturge Weber Syndrome. In June of this year, he retired from Duke University, where he remains an Emeritus Professor.
